Biological algae control in aquarium & garden pond
With the ZooBest barley straw pellets you can combat filamentous and floating algae in your pond and aquarium in a natural and biological way without using toxins that are harmful to fish and plants.
Among other things, barley straw promotes the development of beneficial microorganisms (such as paramecium), which in turn feed on algae and their spores. In addition, the pellets cause a slight yellowing of the water, thus reducing the amount of light in the water slightly and inhibiting algae growth. Both effects work synergistically, i.e. they reinforce each other and thus make life difficult for the algae. Taller plants (aquatic plants) are hardly affected, gain the upper hand over the algae over time and then play their own part in algae prevention by directly consuming algae-promoting nutrients.
ZooBest barley straw pellets are pressed from organically grown barley straw using a high-pressure extruder process. Fish and other aquatic organisms are not harmed by the active substances released. On the contrary, the developing microorganisms serve as food for fish fry and, if necessary, fish food such as mosquito larvae and water fleas.
Application
The pellets are supplied ready to use in a drawstring bag made of fine-meshed filter gauze and can therefore be used directly. Please note that the filter bags must never be filled to capacity, as the pellets swell strongly due to water absorption and can otherwise cause the bags to tear. Please place the filled bags directly into the filter chamber or place them in a location with a good flow of water.
Replace the old pellets with fresh ones every 3 months. The used material can easily be disposed of in the compost or organic waste bin; the mesh bag should be disposed of in the residual waste if it can no longer be used.
Barley straw only works in the long term, but it is sustainable! The algae will not disappear the next day or the day after - you should therefore be patient.

3 litres correspond to approx. 1.8 - 2.0 kg (the weight is not binding as it depends on the residual moisture of the pellets)
For smaller volumes of water, some of the dry pellets can be removed from the net bag and stored dry for later use.

Very good for the biological balance
I use the straw pellets to breed microorganisms such as rotifers and paramecia in my (filterless) aquarium, for general biological balance and as food for my little ones.
As my shrimps obviously like the pellets, I filled tea eggs with pellets and sunk them behind moss and stones in the aquarium. The tea eggs need to be less than half full as they swell up a lot. Every now and then I throw a few pellets into the aquarium, as there are more than enough.
