General information
The sea almond tree(Terminalia catappa L.) or also known as ketapang or Indian or Tropical Almond is widespread in almost all tropical regions of the world. Due to its salt tolerance, the tree is mainly cultivated to provide shade near the beach. The area of natural distribution stretches from Madagascar via India to the Fiji, Ryukyu and Bonin Islands.
Systematically, the sea almond belongs to the Combretaceae family. These are woody plants of the tropics and subtropics, some are lianas (spreading climbers). The flowers are small and inconspicuous. Fruits, especially of the littoral species, are often spread by water, the buoyancy is ensured by an air-rich pericarp, some of the other species also have wing fruits.
The fruits of the sea almond tree have an almond-like flavour and are therefore often eaten.
Another well-known member of this plant family is the white mangrove(Lagencularia racemosa).
Effect
The active ingredients in the leaves (including tannins) have a mild disinfectant and fungicidal effect. In its native country, the decoction of the leaves is also used to treat colic and nausea in humans.
Accordingly, it can be used, for example, as a preventative measure against spawn fungus, but also for the treatment and prophylaxis of fin rot and mucous membrane problems.
The pH is only lowered very slightly and the total salt content (conductivity) is increased slightly.
After a while, the water takes on a beautiful amber colour, but remains crystal clear.
Dosage
2 - 3 large or 4 - 5 small leaves per 100 litres of water.
Simply place in the aquarium. After 1 - 2 days, the leaves will be saturated with water and sink. In addition to their effect, they also provide a decorative sight in a natural-looking tank.
After 2 - 3 weeks the effect is exhausted and the leaves can be replaced. Sucker catfish, shrimps and crayfish will also regard the soaked leaves as a welcome change in their diet.
Storage
Store the leaves in a dry, airy place away from light
