Snail cichlids are small cichlids from Lake Tanganyika that depend on the presence of empty snail shells to survive. These dwarf cichlids are ideal aquarium fish due to their unusual behaviour and their unproblematic care and breeding. Another advantage is their small size, which is only between four and six centimetres for most species, which means that they require comparatively little space and can also be kept and breed appropriately in modern small aquariums. In the thirty years that have passed since they were first imported, these interesting and attractive dwarfs have become a firm favourite in the aquarium hobby.

This guide provides an overview of the best-known species, describing their way of life, social behaviour, breeding care and aquarium requirements.
