Tetras are among the most commonly kept fish in the aquarium. However, they are usually only seen as an enlivening element in the community aquarium. This is because these beautiful animals are visually very appealing, but are considered rather uninteresting in terms of their behaviour and biology.
The author dispels this prejudice: He describes the extremely differentiated social behaviour, the fascinating reproductive biology and the brood care of many tetra species. He has intensively observed the animals in their natural habitats and derives valuable information on the care and breeding of characins in the aquarium.
