TFC polyamide reverse osmosis membranes contain a thin, dense film layer (usually made of polysulfone) on a porous carrier layer that is spirally wound around the core. The film layer consists of a cross-linked aromatic polyamide, which is produced by interfacial polymerisation of a polyfunctional amine such as m-phenylenediamine with a polyfunctional acid chloride such as benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid chloride.
The TFC production process thus enables the independent optimisation of the properties of the carrier layer and the salt retention layer. TFC reverse osmosis membranes are therefore characterised by a high, specific water flow rate and high salt retention.
