More than half of the 1500 or so cichlids that exist on earth are found in East Africa. This handbook, which is a completely revised, updated and expanded new edition, provides an overview of the variety of forms as well as the different reproduction and lifestyles of these interesting fish using a representative selection of species that are recommended for keeping in the aquarium. The focus is on the cichlids of the two large lakes in the East African Rift Valley.

Since the first imports in the late 1950s and mid-1960s, the cichlids of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi have played a very special role in the aquarium hobby. While the Malawi cichlids are among the most popular aquarium fish mainly because of their vibrant colours, the cichlids from Lake Tanganyika are particularly popular in the aquarium because of their highly interesting breeding habits.

Many new species and genera have been described since the previous edition. There are new insights into the biology and, above all, the reproduction of many East African cichlids. Extremely colourful breeding forms have been created. All these innovations have been incorporated into this sixth edition of the classic book, which has been completely revised and supplemented with many new pages.
