Protists

Under this designation the eukaryotic unicellular organisms and differentiated from the prokaryotes (bacteria and cyanobacteria) and all multicellular eukaryotes of the plant and animal kingdom.

Within the protists, autotrophic forms and heterotrophic forms are sometimes differentiated and categorised as protophytes and protozoa of plants or animals (or fungi). However, this subdivision does not usually correspond to the phylogenetic relationships, but in some cases separates close relatives from each other.
