Gram behaviour
Differentiation of two groups of bacteria according to morphological characteristics, represented by a specific staining method. staining method. The differences in cell wall thickness and structure demonstrated in this way have significance for potential therapy, among other things.
The cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria are approx. 30 nm thick and consist of murein (80%) in addition to teichoic acids, polysaccharides and glycolipids. The Gram-negative cell walls are only half as thick (15 nm). However, in contrast to the Gram-positive cell walls, this cell wall has a membrane on the outside.
